The Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) has been enacted by the European Union (EU) to encourage higher quality ESG reporting by entities who operate in the EU. At present, entities must only report if they are in "material compliance" with CSRD's requirements. We expect in the future that entities will be required to "correct" their performance in areas where they fail to comply or "explain" why they do not. At present, CSRD focuses on 35 distinct areas of sustainability performance. The regulations that underly it refer to hundreds of indicators that entities can test to determine their level of compliance.
SASB (The Sustainability Accounting Standards Board), founded in 2011, created a framework for disclosing financially material ESG factors specific to 77 industries. Its standards help companies report sustainability issues that directly affect financial performance. In 2021, SASB merged into the ISSB to support a global baseline for sustainability reporting.
SDG stands for Sustainable Development Goals. These are a set of 17 global goals adopted by the United Nations in 2015 as a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure peace and prosperity for all by 2030, according to the UNDP and the World Health Organization. The 17 SDGs are integrated; they recognize that action in one area will affect outcomes in others, and that development must balance social, economic and environmental sustainability.
TNFD stands for the Taskforce on Nature Related Financial Disclosures. The goal of the TNFD to provide a global framework for organizations to identify, assess, manage, and disclose nature-related risks and opportunities, so that financial and business decisions support nature-positive outcomes and long-term resilience. The TNFD framework groups its disclosure recommendations into 15 topics, aligned with the four TCFD pillars (Governance, Strategy, Risk & Impact Management, Metrics & Targets).
