Before joining Norfolk Southern in 1999, Stephen Young had never been involved in community volunteer work. Now, Young, manager intermodal equipment, is a fixture with the Norfolk Thoroughbred Volunteers. He has twice earned Volunteer of the Year award for most volunteer hours and has chaired the group for the past year.

Norfolk Southern’s safety train recently completed its 2016 tour, training 1,926 first responders in 18 cities in 13 states across NS’ rail network. With rolling classrooms and hands-on activities, the safety train provided free training to firefighters, police officers, emergency management personnel, and other first responders on how to safely respond to a rail-related hazardous materials incident.

Norfolk Southern always is looking for innovative ways to improve customer service. In 2015, that drive led to the unveiling of ExpressNS, a name that describes exactly what it does. This mobile phone app – the first of its kind in the rail industry – helps speed the flow of truckers as they arrive at NS intermodal facilities to pick up or deliver customers’ trailers and containers.

As owner of some 6,000 trucks, SUVs, and cars used in field operations across a sprawling 22-state system, Norfolk Southern ranks as a Top 100 commercial fleet. In 2015, the company piloted a test using telematics technology to enhance driver safety. NS saw improvements across a range of driving performance metrics, including benefits beyond safety – such as better fuel economy.

Norfolk Southern trains run through thousands of communities in the eastern U.S., delivering goods that support local economies and residents. To promote safe rail operations, NS invests in community awareness programs that target two troublesome areas: trespassing on railroad tracks and unsafe motorist behavior at highway-rail grade crossings.
-
Norfolk Southern rolled out a strategic plan in 2015 that sets targets for the company’s economic performance over five years. Developed by CEO Jim Squires, his senior management team, and the company’s board of directors, the dynamic plan is based on the core competencies of NS’ business: safety and service; revenue growth; and stewardship of resources through productivity and operating efficiencies.

In 2015, Norfolk Southern completed a five-year community partnership to reforest 10,000 acres in the Mississippi Delta, a “Trees and Trains” initiative to mitigate carbon emissions the natural way. Partnering with GreenTrees, a reforestation program, NS invested $5.6 million to plant more than 6 million cottonwood and native hardwood trees on land cleared for farming years ago but that had become marginally productive as cropland.

Norfolk Southern considers it a corporate responsibility to mitigate the environmental impacts of rail operations. Because the consumption of locomotive diesel fuel makes up about 90 percent of the company’s carbon emissions, NS has adopted strategic initiatives to reduce fuel use, which lower business costs and environmental impacts.

“There is a concentrated outreach effort around increasing recruitment of females, especially in operations. Having women in our workforce who are successful helps, because that makes it easier for us to recruit and retain more women. It doesn’t matter where you are in a company, if you can’t look around and see people like yourself, you’re going to ask, ‘Is this the place for me?’” ~ Cindy Earhart\rExecutive Vice President, Administration, Norfolk Southern http://nssustainability.com/culture/div
