Every year, 250,000 people leave the military. This is a very challenging transition. In many metropolitan areas, up to 80% of veterans leave without a job lined up, and about half of veterans leave their first post-military job within a year. Companies are failing to recognize veterans’ skill sets. Only 17% of companies consider military veterans to be useful contributors to the workplace.Starting immediately, fintech startup Better.com will hire 80 veterans through Andreessen Horowitz-backed startup Shift.org, which places veterans with growth tech companies. In addition to veterans, Better.com’s new military hiring program commits to hiring veteran spouses. The military spouse unemployment rate is a staggering 16%.Better.com follows fellow tech companies Amazon, Dell, Uber, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, who also pledged to hire veterans and military spouses.
