GMH Communities Trust was a self-advised, self-managed, specialty housing company that focused on providing housing to college and university students residing off-campus and to members of the U.S. military and their families. The company was sold in a two part transaction in the second quarter of 2008: American Campus Communities Inc. (NYSE: ACC), an Austin, Texas, developer and owner of student housing, purchased the company’s student housing division, while the US subsidiary of London-based construction firm Balfour Beatty plc bought its military housing division.

We considered many names for our site—in fact we spent our first year and a half under a different name—EkoHub. We liked “Eko” — coming from the Greek word Oikos, related to economy, ecology, and “home” or social concerns. From the beginning, we believed the word “Hub” reflected our desire to be at the center of the sustainability area, providing knowledge, harmony, and consensus among the hundreds of experts judging the ESG performance of companies.
