Kohler Co. is proud to have supported the winning Virginia Tech team in its champion finish at the Solar Decathlon, an international competition to build the best solar home. The team, which beat out 27 other universities and 15 teams from 11 countries, incorporated Kohler plumbing products and technologies in its first-place.
Team Orange County, a joint project by four local colleges, won second place in engineering for the innovation, functionality, efficiency and reliability of the solar-powered house it designed and built for the 2015 Solar Decathlon.
The solar decathlon is not a sporting event. University students from across the world are challenged to build and operate an ultra energy-efficient, yet cost-effective, solar-powered home.
If anybody should know how to build a fully solar-powered house, it’s Moritz Limpinsel. The 32-year-old native of Germany has devoted his studies to solar cells, just completing a Ph.D. in chemistry and materials physics at the University of California, Irvine. Except, knowing how to and actually doing it are worlds apart.
