Being an organic farmer can be challenging. Farmers are faced with constant pricing pressures from conventional competitors and, in places like California, water limitations and labor shortages also can be an obstacle. That’s why many organic farmers are looking for solutions to help them be more innovative and efficient in growing their crops.

I love getting to meet and learn from innovators from all walks of life. When people from diverse backgrounds — geographically, culturally, ethnically or professionally — come together to address social challenges, the results are awe-inspiring.

Everyone remembers where they were the morning of Sept. 11, 2001. With 2,996 lives lost in the attacks, and millions more affected, this moment in American history united the nation and awoke in me — and many others — a dormant feeling of patriotism and a desire to serve.

Earth Day is a reminder of the responsibility I have to ensure future generations can cherish and enjoy our planet. Throughout my life, I’ve had a passion for sustainability and conservation. And as a volunteer, I’m able to do my part. I’m lucky enough to be able to focus that passion to help preserve the earth every day – and encourage others to join me along the way.

On December 18, 2008, my family was on a long drive home from NYC from what would ultimately be my daughter Lauren’s last doctor appointment. Lauren had been fighting a brain tumor for more than 5 years. After this visit, she began to think about everything she wanted to do – become the first female president, get a perfect score on her SATs, and go to Harvard Law School. And so she began to develop an idea to grant children their final wishes.

January is National Mentoring Month, a month dedicated to promoting and encouraging youth mentoring across the country. We know that when mentors connect to young people, both are changed for the better. In fact, more than one in three students at risk of not graduating from high school grow up without an adult mentor in their life.

In the spring of 2016, CommonLit.org was a collection of about 100 individual PDF reading lessons that English teachers could download and use with their students. Despite its humble start, I had a big vision. I came to the AT&T Aspire team with a simple pitch: Create the best reading and writing program in America and make it available for free so that even the most vulnerable students could access it online.

Building a company is incredibly hard... and incredibly rewarding. I know from experience. Before working at AT&T, I supported a portfolio of start-ups at a venture capital firm. There’s nothing quite like making an idea a reality and seeing its impact on others.

Feb. 17, 2017 will forever be burned into my mind. The Bitsbox team had that date circled in red on the calendar for months prior. It’s the day some of us sweat through our shirts and others found comfort in raiding the snack cabinet. Feb. 17 was the day our pitch to Shark Tank investors aired on TV.

I come from a family of educators, but I am not one myself.\r\rWhen I started as the Entrepreneur-in-Residence at the AT&T Aspire Accelerator focused on ed-tech, I had a small case of imposter syndrome. Sure, I’d worked in technology for my entire career, but what about the “ed” part of ed-tech? What did I know about education? How could I be taken seriously?

In December of 2015, I was at home with my family enjoying the rest of the holiday season when multiple tornadoes hit the Dallas area. We later found out that some of our friends were impacted by one of the tornados. My natural instinct was to get in the car immediately to provide the support they needed. In all honesty, I did not have a plan. I just wanted to help.

I loved being a Brownie. My mom was our troop leader, and it was fun to sing “Make new friends but keep the old” in a round. I felt proud earning badges and wearing my uniform, and liked competing with the other girls in my troop on who could sell the most Girl Scout cookies. I now realize that these early lessons in setting goals, learning new skills and being part of a team helped prepare me for adulthood.

Silicon Valley and Washington, D.C. think tanks are not the only ones mulling over the future of our workforce. By 2020, the U.S. will have 85 million medium- and high-skilled job vacancies with not enough people qualified to fill them, according to McKinsey. And while solutions to this skills problem are coming from the startup world and the policy sphere, the country’s largest corporations also are playing a significant role in developing solutions.
