Atmos Energy Corporation (AEC) is engaged primarily in the natural gas utility business, as well as other natural gas non-utility businesses. The Company operates through four segments: the utility segment, which includes its regulated natural gas distribution and related sales operations; the natural gas marketing segment, which includes a variety of non-regulated natural gas management services; the pipeline and storage segment, which includes AEC's regulated and non-regulated natural gas transmission and storage services, and the other nonutility segment, which includes all of the Company's other non-regulated non-utility operations. As of September 30, 2006, the Company had distributed natural gas through sales and transportation arrangements to approximately 3.2 million residential, commercial, public authority and industrial customers through its seven regulated utility divisions, which covered service areas in 12 states.
