Pennsylvania DOEP

The Pennsylvania DEP's Bureau of Oil and Gas Management regulates the safe exploration, development and recovery of Marcellus Shale natural gas reservoirs in a manner that will protect the commonwealth's natural resources and the environment. DEP is responsible for reviewing and issuing drilling permits, inspecting drilling operations and responding to complaints about water quality problems. These information are made available to the public on their website. DEP inspectors conduct routine and unannounced inspections of drilling sites and wells statewide. In addition to permitting and enforcement, DEP works to instruct and advise well drillers and operators on best management practices and procedures for environmental control and waste management.
