The Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) is a network-based organization that has pioneered the development of the world’s most widely used sustainability reporting framework and is committed to its continuous improvement and application worldwide. In order to ensure the highest degree of technical quality, credibility, and relevance, the reporting framework is developed through a consensus-seeking process with participants drawn globally from business, civil society, labor, and professional institutions. The cornerstone of the framework is the Sustainability Reporting Guidelines. The updated third version of the Guidelines – known as the G3.1 Guidelines - was published in 2011, and is a free public good. Other components of the framework include Sector Supplements (unique indicators for industry sectors) and National Annexes (unique country-level information).
Sustainability reports based on the GRI framework can be used to benchmark organizational performance with respect to laws, norms, codes, performance standards and voluntary initiatives; demonstrate organizational commitment to sustainable development; and compare organizational performance over time. We have attempted to map the provisions in the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) G3.1 standard to our CSRHub data aggregation schema. The CSRHub schema is at a higher level of detail than the G3.1 guideline. Further, the GRI entries cover what a company does or does not reveal and report--it is not intended as a rating system. In contrast, our schema is tied to company performance and results in a 0 to 100 rating.
Despite these differences, we felt that many CSRHub users may want to understand the relationship between our system and GRI. We also hope that mapping our systems together will focus more attention on GRI and the G3.1 framework. CSRHub is a Global Reporting Initiative Organizational Stakeholder (OS).
